Runbook 01 — Interoceptive Somatic Scan & Myofascial Down-Regulation

Runbook Metadata

1. Physiological Rationale: Why Stress Hides in Specific Somatic Checkpoints

Before sympathetic activation registers as conscious anxiety, the central autonomic network (CAN) and locus coeruleus increase baseline gamma-motoneuron drive to muscle spindles and alter cranial nerve motor tone. By turning attention inward (interoception via the posterior-to-anterior insula pathway) and auditing specific anatomical bottlenecks, you catch sympathetic drift early and use peripheral mechanoreceptors to send an afferent “all-clear” signal back to the brainstem.

2. Step-by-Step Execution Runbook

Phase A: The 60-Second Top-Down Interoceptive Scan

  1. Pause & Shift Gaze: Unfocus from narrow foveal (screen/task) vision to wide panoramic peripheral vision (reduces amygdala/locus coeruleus drive).
  2. Sweep Top-to-Bottom:
    • Crown, Temples & Ears: Notice and release any subtle contraction around the auricular muscles and temples.
    • Jaw (TMJ): Let the mandible hang slightly loose inside closed lips.
    • Neck & Shoulders: Let both shoulders drop on a slow exhale.
    • Lower Back & Hips: Unclench glutes, psoas, and paraspinal muscles.
    • Ankles & Calves: Notice if your calves or toes are gripping the floor; let your heels sink.

Phase B: Calm Breath-Synchronized Myofascial Release (5–8 Minutes)

Perform every movement slowly, smoothly, and without bouncing, pairing the deepening of each stretch with a slow, unhurried exhalation (see Runbook 02 - Acute Brainstem & Dive Reflex Reset (Breath + Trigeminal Cold)):

  1. Controlled Cervical Rolls & Scalene Release (60–90s):
    • Drop chin gently toward sternum, roll right ear toward right shoulder (pausing on tight bands of the left SCM/scalenes for 2 slow breath cycles), then sweep slowly to the left. Avoid forceful posterior cervical hyperextension.
  2. All-Around Shoulder Girdle & Thoracic Expansion (90s):
    • Slow full-range glenohumeral circles, cross-body posterior deltoid/rhomboid stretch, and overhead latissimus/pectoralis fascia opening while expanding the lateral ribcage on inhalation.
  3. Standing or Seated Forward Bend / Posterior Chain Decompression (90–120s):
    • Soften the knees slightly, hinge at the hips, and let the head, neck, and arms hang heavy toward the floor.
    • Dual Mechanism: Decompresses the thoracolumbar fascia and hamstring/erector chain while mild head-below-heart inversion increases carotid sinus hydrostatic pressure—stimulating arterial baroreceptors () to reflexively lower heart rate and sympathetic nerve traffic.
  4. Gastrocnemius, Soleus & Ankle Mobilization (90s):
    • Perform a slow calf stretch (straight-knee for gastrocnemius, bent-knee for deep soleus/Achilles) for per side, followed by slow ankle circles.
    • Mechanism: The soleus and Achilles house a high density of Golgi tendon organs (Ib afferents) and Ruffini mechanoreceptors; sustained gentle tension (>30s) triggers spinal autogenic inhibition and dampens ascending reticular activating system (ARAS) arousal.

3. Biomarker & Telemetry Verification

  • Immediate Readout: Drop in resting EMG tension (jaw/trapezius), drop in heart rate by , and acute rise in short-term RMSSD / HF-HRV (trackable via Polar H10 + Kubios HRV).
